How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64
  2. Multiply: 0.64 × 10 = 6.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.4 ÷ 10 × 100 = 64%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 64/100 = part/10, so part = 64 × 10 ÷ 100 = 6.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =64%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.4 is the 64% share of 10. The remaining 36% is 3.6, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 64% off an item priced $10 saves $6.4, so you pay $3.6.

Adding and taking away 64%

Increasing 10 by 64% gives 16.4 and decreasing it by 64% gives 3.6. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 64% and then lowering the result by 64% ends at 5.904, because the second 64% is taken of a bigger number.
