How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 68 ÷ 100 = 0.68
  2. Multiply: 0.68 × 50 = 34
  3. Check: Work backwards: 34 ÷ 50 × 100 = 68%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 68/100 = part/50, so part = 68 × 50 ÷ 100 = 34. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =68%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

34 is the 68% share of 50. The remaining 32% is 16, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 68% off an item priced $50 saves $34, so you pay $16.

Adding and taking away 68%

Increasing 50 by 68% gives 84 and decreasing it by 68% gives 16. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 68% and then lowering the result by 68% ends at 26.88, because the second 68% is taken of a bigger number.
