How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 68 ÷ 100 = 0.68
  2. Multiply: 0.68 × 60 = 40.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 40.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 68%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 68/100 = part/60, so part = 68 × 60 ÷ 100 = 40.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =68%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

40.8 is the 68% share of 60. The remaining 32% is 19.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 68% off an item priced $60 saves $40.8, so you pay $19.2.

Adding and taking away 68%

Increasing 60 by 68% gives 100.8 and decreasing it by 68% gives 19.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 68% and then lowering the result by 68% ends at 32.256, because the second 68% is taken of a bigger number.
