How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 85 = 5.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.95 ÷ 85 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/85, so part = 7 × 85 ÷ 100 = 5.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*85. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.95 is the 7% share of 85. The remaining 93% is 79.05, and the two parts add back up to 85.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $85 saves $5.95, so you pay $79.05.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 85 by 7% gives 90.95 and decreasing it by 7% gives 79.05. These do not cancel out: raising 85 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 84.5835, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
