How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 700 ÷ 100 = 7
- Multiply: 7 × 10 = 70
- Check: Work backwards: 70 ÷ 10 × 100 = 700%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 700/100 = part/10, so part = 700 × 10 ÷ 100 = 70. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =700%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 700% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 10: it is 7 times 10.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 700% of its $10 cost means selling it for $70.
Adding and taking away 700%
Increasing 10 by 700% gives 80. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 700% and then lowering the result by 700% ends at -480, because the second 700% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 700. 700% of 10 and 10% of 700 are always equal (both are 700 × 10 ÷ 100 = 70), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
