How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
  2. Multiply: 0.08 × 100 = 8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8 ÷ 100 × 100 = 8%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/100, so part = 8 × 100 ÷ 100 = 8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =8%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8 is the 8% share of 100. The remaining 92% is 92, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 8% off an item priced $100 saves $8, so you pay $92.

Adding and taking away 8%

Increasing 100 by 8% gives 108 and decreasing it by 8% gives 92. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 99.36, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.
