How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
  2. Multiply: 0.08 × 50 = 4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4 ÷ 50 × 100 = 8%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/50, so part = 8 × 50 ÷ 100 = 4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =8%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4 is the 8% share of 50. The remaining 92% is 46, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 8% off an item priced $50 saves $4, so you pay $46.

Adding and taking away 8%

Increasing 50 by 8% gives 54 and decreasing it by 8% gives 46. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 49.68, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.
