How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
- Multiply: 0.45 × 80 = 36
- Check: Work backwards: 36 ÷ 80 × 100 = 45%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/80, so part = 45 × 80 ÷ 100 = 36. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =45%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
36 is the 45% share of 80. The remaining 55% is 44, and the two parts add back up to 80.
Discounts: 45% off an item priced $80 saves $36, so you pay $44.
Adding and taking away 45%
Increasing 80 by 45% gives 116 and decreasing it by 45% gives 44. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 63.8, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
