How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 81 ÷ 100 = 0.81
  2. Multiply: 0.81 × 40 = 32.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 32.4 ÷ 40 × 100 = 81%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 81/100 = part/40, so part = 81 × 40 ÷ 100 = 32.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =81%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

32.4 is the 81% share of 40. The remaining 19% is 7.6, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 81% off an item priced $40 saves $32.4, so you pay $7.6.

Adding and taking away 81%

Increasing 40 by 81% gives 72.4 and decreasing it by 81% gives 7.6. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 81% and then lowering the result by 81% ends at 13.756, because the second 81% is taken of a bigger number.
