How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 95 ÷ 100 = 0.95
  2. Multiply: 0.95 × 60 = 57
  3. Check: Work backwards: 57 ÷ 60 × 100 = 95%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 95/100 = part/60, so part = 95 × 60 ÷ 100 = 57. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =95%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

57 is the 95% share of 60. The remaining 5% is 3, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 95% off an item priced $60 saves $57, so you pay $3.

Adding and taking away 95%

Increasing 60 by 95% gives 117 and decreasing it by 95% gives 3. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 95% and then lowering the result by 95% ends at 5.85, because the second 95% is taken of a bigger number.
