How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 97 ÷ 100 = 0.97
  2. Multiply: 0.97 × 30 = 29.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 29.1 ÷ 30 × 100 = 97%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 97/100 = part/30, so part = 97 × 30 ÷ 100 = 29.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =97%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

29.1 is the 97% share of 30. The remaining 3% is 0.9, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 97% off an item priced $30 saves $29.1, so you pay $0.9.

Adding and taking away 97%

Increasing 30 by 97% gives 59.1 and decreasing it by 97% gives 0.9. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 97% and then lowering the result by 97% ends at 1.773, because the second 97% is taken of a bigger number.
