How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
- Multiply: 0.98 × 40 = 39.2
- Check: Work backwards: 39.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 98%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/40, so part = 98 × 40 ÷ 100 = 39.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =98%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
39.2 is the 98% share of 40. The remaining 2% is 0.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.
Discounts: 98% off an item priced $40 saves $39.2, so you pay $0.8.
Adding and taking away 98%
Increasing 40 by 98% gives 79.2 and decreasing it by 98% gives 0.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 1.584, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
