How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 10 = 9.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.9 ÷ 10 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/10, so part = 99 × 10 ÷ 100 = 9.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.9 is the 99% share of 10. The remaining 1% is 0.1, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $10 saves $9.9, so you pay $0.1.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 10 by 99% gives 19.9 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.1. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.199, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
