How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 400 ÷ 100 = 4
- Multiply: 4 × 10 = 40
- Check: Work backwards: 40 ÷ 10 × 100 = 400%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 400/100 = part/10, so part = 400 × 10 ÷ 100 = 40. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =400%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 400% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 10: it is 4 times 10.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 400% of its $10 cost means selling it for $40.
Adding and taking away 400%
Increasing 10 by 400% gives 50. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 400% and then lowering the result by 400% ends at -150, because the second 400% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 400. 400% of 10 and 10% of 400 are always equal (both are 400 × 10 ÷ 100 = 40), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
