How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 950 = 95
- Check: Work backwards: 95 ÷ 950 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/950, so part = 10 × 950 ÷ 100 = 95. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*950. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
95 is the 10% share of 950. The remaining 90% is 855, and the two parts add back up to 950.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $950 saves $95, so you pay $855.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 950 by 10% gives 1,045 and decreasing it by 10% gives 855. These do not cancel out: raising 950 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 940.5, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 950% of 10. 10% of 950 and 950% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 950 ÷ 100 = 95), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
