How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
  2. Multiply: 0.11 × 60 = 6.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 11%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/60, so part = 11 × 60 ÷ 100 = 6.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =11%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.6 is the 11% share of 60. The remaining 89% is 53.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 11% off an item priced $60 saves $6.6, so you pay $53.4.

Adding and taking away 11%

Increasing 60 by 11% gives 66.6 and decreasing it by 11% gives 53.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 59.274, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.
