How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5
- Multiply: 1.5 × 10 = 15
- Check: Work backwards: 15 ÷ 10 × 100 = 150%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 150/100 = part/10, so part = 150 × 10 ÷ 100 = 15. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =150%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 150% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 10: it is 1.5 times 10.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 150% of its $10 cost means selling it for $15.
Adding and taking away 150%
Increasing 10 by 150% gives 25. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 150% and then lowering the result by 150% ends at -12.5, because the second 150% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 150. 150% of 10 and 10% of 150 are always equal (both are 150 × 10 ÷ 100 = 15), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
