How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17
  2. Multiply: 0.17 × 60 = 10.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 17%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 17/100 = part/60, so part = 17 × 60 ÷ 100 = 10.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =17%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.2 is the 17% share of 60. The remaining 83% is 49.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 17% off an item priced $60 saves $10.2, so you pay $49.8.

Adding and taking away 17%

Increasing 60 by 17% gives 70.2 and decreasing it by 17% gives 49.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 17% and then lowering the result by 17% ends at 58.266, because the second 17% is taken of a bigger number.
