How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 10 = 0.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.2 ÷ 10 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/10, so part = 2 × 10 ÷ 100 = 0.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.2 is the 2% share of 10. The remaining 98% is 9.8, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $10 saves $0.2, so you pay $9.8.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 10 by 2% gives 10.2 and decreasing it by 2% gives 9.8. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 9.996, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
