How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 200 ÷ 100 = 2
  2. Multiply: 2 × 40 = 80
  3. Check: Work backwards: 80 ÷ 40 × 100 = 200%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 200/100 = part/40, so part = 200 × 40 ÷ 100 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.
