How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 100 = 23
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23 ÷ 100 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/100, so part = 23 × 100 ÷ 100 = 23. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23 is the 23% share of 100. The remaining 77% is 77, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $100 saves $23, so you pay $77.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 100 by 23% gives 123 and decreasing it by 23% gives 77. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 94.71, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
