How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 60 = 13.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/60, so part = 23 × 60 ÷ 100 = 13.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13.8 is the 23% share of 60. The remaining 77% is 46.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $60 saves $13.8, so you pay $46.2.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 60 by 23% gives 73.8 and decreasing it by 23% gives 46.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 56.826, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
