How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 30 = 8.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.7 ÷ 30 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/30, so part = 29 × 30 ÷ 100 = 8.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.7 is the 29% share of 30. The remaining 71% is 21.3, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $30 saves $8.7, so you pay $21.3.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 30 by 29% gives 38.7 and decreasing it by 29% gives 21.3. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 27.477, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
