How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 50 = 14.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/50, so part = 29 × 50 ÷ 100 = 14.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.5 is the 29% share of 50. The remaining 71% is 35.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $50 saves $14.5, so you pay $35.5.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 50 by 29% gives 64.5 and decreasing it by 29% gives 35.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 45.795, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
