How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 70 = 2.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.1 ÷ 70 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/70, so part = 3 × 70 ÷ 100 = 2.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.1 is the 3% share of 70. The remaining 97% is 67.9, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $70 saves $2.1, so you pay $67.9.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 70 by 3% gives 72.1 and decreasing it by 3% gives 67.9. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 69.937, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
