How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
- Multiply: 0.3 × 17 = 5.1
- Check: Work backwards: 5.1 ÷ 17 × 100 = 30%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 30/100 = part/17, so part = 30 × 17 ÷ 100 = 5.1. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =30%*17. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.1 is the 30% share of 17. The remaining 70% is 11.9, and the two parts add back up to 17.
Discounts: 30% off an item priced $17 saves $5.1, so you pay $11.9.
Adding and taking away 30%
Increasing 17 by 30% gives 22.1 and decreasing it by 30% gives 11.9. These do not cancel out: raising 17 by 30% and then lowering the result by 30% ends at 15.47, because the second 30% is taken of a bigger number.
