How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 39 ÷ 100 = 0.39
  2. Multiply: 0.39 × 40 = 15.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15.6 ÷ 40 × 100 = 39%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 39/100 = part/40, so part = 39 × 40 ÷ 100 = 15.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =39%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15.6 is the 39% share of 40. The remaining 61% is 24.4, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 39% off an item priced $40 saves $15.6, so you pay $24.4.

Adding and taking away 39%

Increasing 40 by 39% gives 55.6 and decreasing it by 39% gives 24.4. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 39% and then lowering the result by 39% ends at 33.916, because the second 39% is taken of a bigger number.
