How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
- Multiply: 0.04 × 100 = 4
- Check: Work backwards: 4 ÷ 100 × 100 = 4%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/100, so part = 4 × 100 ÷ 100 = 4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =4%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4 is the 4% share of 100. The remaining 96% is 96, and the two parts add back up to 100.
Discounts: 4% off an item priced $100 saves $4, so you pay $96.
Adding and taking away 4%
Increasing 100 by 4% gives 104 and decreasing it by 4% gives 96. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 99.84, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 4. 4% of 100 and 100% of 4 are always equal (both are 4 × 100 ÷ 100 = 4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
