How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
  2. Multiply: 0.42 × 45 = 18.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18.9 ÷ 45 × 100 = 42%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/45, so part = 42 × 45 ÷ 100 = 18.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =42%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18.9 is the 42% share of 45. The remaining 58% is 26.1, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 42% off an item priced $45 saves $18.9, so you pay $26.1.

Adding and taking away 42%

Increasing 45 by 42% gives 63.9 and decreasing it by 42% gives 26.1. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 42% and then lowering the result by 42% ends at 37.062, because the second 42% is taken of a bigger number.
