How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 42 = 18.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18.9 ÷ 42 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/42, so part = 45 × 42 ÷ 100 = 18.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*42. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18.9 is the 45% share of 42. The remaining 55% is 23.1, and the two parts add back up to 42.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $42 saves $18.9, so you pay $23.1.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 42 by 45% gives 60.9 and decreasing it by 45% gives 23.1. These do not cancel out: raising 42 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 33.495, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
