How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 60 = 25.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/60, so part = 43 × 60 ÷ 100 = 25.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

25.8 is the 43% share of 60. The remaining 57% is 34.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $60 saves $25.8, so you pay $34.2.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 60 by 43% gives 85.8 and decreasing it by 43% gives 34.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 48.906, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
