How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 44 ÷ 100 = 0.44
  2. Multiply: 0.44 × 60 = 26.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 44%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 44/100 = part/60, so part = 44 × 60 ÷ 100 = 26.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =44%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

26.4 is the 44% share of 60. The remaining 56% is 33.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 44% off an item priced $60 saves $26.4, so you pay $33.6.

Adding and taking away 44%

Increasing 60 by 44% gives 86.4 and decreasing it by 44% gives 33.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 44% and then lowering the result by 44% ends at 48.384, because the second 44% is taken of a bigger number.
