How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 60 = 34.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 34.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/60, so part = 58 × 60 ÷ 100 = 34.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

34.8 is the 58% share of 60. The remaining 42% is 25.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $60 saves $34.8, so you pay $25.2.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 60 by 58% gives 94.8 and decreasing it by 58% gives 25.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 39.816, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
