How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 88 ÷ 100 = 0.88
  2. Multiply: 0.88 × 40 = 35.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 35.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 88%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 88/100 = part/40, so part = 88 × 40 ÷ 100 = 35.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =88%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

35.2 is the 88% share of 40. The remaining 12% is 4.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 88% off an item priced $40 saves $35.2, so you pay $4.8.

Adding and taking away 88%

Increasing 40 by 88% gives 75.2 and decreasing it by 88% gives 4.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 88% and then lowering the result by 88% ends at 9.024, because the second 88% is taken of a bigger number.
