How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
- Multiply: 0.09 × 10 = 0.9
- Check: Work backwards: 0.9 ÷ 10 × 100 = 9%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/10, so part = 9 × 10 ÷ 100 = 0.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =9%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.9 is the 9% share of 10. The remaining 91% is 9.1, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 9% off an item priced $10 saves $0.9, so you pay $9.1.
Adding and taking away 9%
Increasing 10 by 9% gives 10.9 and decreasing it by 9% gives 9.1. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 9.919, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
