How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 96 ÷ 100 = 0.96
  2. Multiply: 0.96 × 100 = 96
  3. Check: Work backwards: 96 ÷ 100 × 100 = 96%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 96/100 = part/100, so part = 96 × 100 ÷ 100 = 96. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =96%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

96 is the 96% share of 100. The remaining 4% is 4, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 96% off an item priced $100 saves $96, so you pay $4.

Adding and taking away 96%

Increasing 100 by 96% gives 196 and decreasing it by 96% gives 4. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 96% and then lowering the result by 96% ends at 7.84, because the second 96% is taken of a bigger number.
