How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 97 ÷ 100 = 0.97
  2. Multiply: 0.97 × 25 = 24.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 97%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 97/100 = part/25, so part = 97 × 25 ÷ 100 = 24.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =97%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.25 is the 97% share of 25. The remaining 3% is 0.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 97% off an item priced $25 saves $24.25, so you pay $0.75.

Adding and taking away 97%

Increasing 25 by 97% gives 49.25 and decreasing it by 97% gives 0.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 97% and then lowering the result by 97% ends at 1.4775, because the second 97% is taken of a bigger number.
