How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 97 ÷ 100 = 0.97
  2. Multiply: 0.97 × 60 = 58.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 58.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 97%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 97/100 = part/60, so part = 97 × 60 ÷ 100 = 58.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =97%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

58.2 is the 97% share of 60. The remaining 3% is 1.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 97% off an item priced $60 saves $58.2, so you pay $1.8.

Adding and taking away 97%

Increasing 60 by 97% gives 118.2 and decreasing it by 97% gives 1.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 97% and then lowering the result by 97% ends at 3.546, because the second 97% is taken of a bigger number.
