Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 141 × k = 140 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 141 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 141.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 141 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 141 away: 1,410 − 141 = 1,269. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 141: 1,410 + 141 = 1,551. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 141 → 282 → 564.

Every multiple of 141 is at least 141, so there are none below 100 and 7 below 1,000. A number is in the 141 times table exactly when it divides by 141 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 141 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 141 × 1 = 141 is odd, 141 × 2 = 282 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 141 × 10 = 1,410, and 141 × 100 = 14,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 1,410 is 705.

Using the 141 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 141 × 7 = 987, you know 987 ÷ 141 = 7 and 987 ÷ 7 = 141. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 141 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 141 = 564 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $141 each. How much do 11 tickets cost?
    Answer11 × $141 = $1,551.
  3. 1,128 chairs are set out in rows of 141. How many rows are there?
    Answer1,128 ÷ 141 = 8 rows.
  4. A plant grows 141 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 9 weeks?
    Answer9 × 141 = 1,269 millimetres.

Questions

What is 141 × 12?

1,692.

What is half of 141 × 8?

141 × 8 = 1,128, and half of that is 564, which is 141 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 141 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 141 contain nothing.

What is 141 × 7 and 141 × 8?

141 × 7 = 987 and 141 × 8 = 1,128. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 2,115 in the 141 times table?

Yes: 2,115 ÷ 141 = 15 with no remainder. 2,116 is not, because dividing it by 141 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 141 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
