Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 4 is even.
- Each answer is 4 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 4.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 4 times table is double the answer in the 2 times table: 2 × 6 = 12, so 4 × 6 = 24. To multiply 4 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 4 away: 40 − 4 = 36. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 4: 40 + 4 = 44. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 4 → 8 → 16.
There are 24 multiples of 4 below 100, and 249 below 1,000. A number is in the 4 times table exactly when it divides by 4 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 4 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 4 × 10 = 40, and 4 × 100 = 400. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 40 is 20.
Using the 4 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 4 × 7 = 28, you know 28 ÷ 4 = 7 and 28 ÷ 7 = 4. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 4 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 4 = 12 pencils. - Tickets cost $4 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
Answer
5 × $4 = $20. - 16 chairs are set out in rows of 4. How many rows are there?
Answer
16 ÷ 4 = 4 rows. - A plant grows 4 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
Answer
11 × 4 = 44 millimetres.
Questions
What is 4 × 12?
48.
What is half of 4 × 8?
4 × 8 = 32, and half of that is 16, which is 4 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 4 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 4 contain nothing.
What is 4 × 7 and 4 × 8?
4 × 7 = 28 and 4 × 8 = 32. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 60 in the 4 times table?
Yes: 60 ÷ 4 = 15 with no remainder. 61 is not, because dividing it by 4 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 4 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
