Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 2, 4, 6, 8, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 2 is even.
- Each answer is 2 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 2.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 2 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 2 away: 20 − 2 = 18. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 2: 20 + 2 = 22. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 2 → 4 → 8.
There are 49 multiples of 2 below 100, and 499 below 1,000. A number is in the 2 times table exactly when it divides by 2 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 2 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 2 × 10 = 20, and 2 × 100 = 200. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 20 is 10.
Using the 2 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 2 × 7 = 14, you know 14 ÷ 2 = 7 and 14 ÷ 7 = 2. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 2 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 2 = 6 pencils. - Tickets cost $2 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
Answer
4 × $2 = $8. - 14 chairs are set out in rows of 2. How many rows are there?
Answer
14 ÷ 2 = 7 rows. - A plant grows 2 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
Answer
11 × 2 = 22 millimetres.
Questions
What is 2 × 12?
24.
What is half of 2 × 8?
2 × 8 = 16, and half of that is 8, which is 2 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 2 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 2 contain nothing.
What is 2 × 7 and 2 × 8?
2 × 7 = 14 and 2 × 8 = 16. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 30 in the 2 times table?
Yes: 30 ÷ 2 = 15 with no remainder. 31 is not, because dividing it by 2 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 2 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
