Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 6, 2, 8, 4, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 6 is even.
- Each answer is 6 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 6.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 6 times table is double the answer in the 3 times table: 3 × 6 = 18, so 6 × 6 = 36. To multiply 6 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 6 away: 60 − 6 = 54. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 6: 60 + 6 = 66. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 6 → 12 → 24.
There are 16 multiples of 6 below 100, and 166 below 1,000. A number is in the 6 times table exactly when it divides by 6 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 6 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 6 × 10 = 60, and 6 × 100 = 600. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 60 is 30.
Using the 6 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 6 × 7 = 42, you know 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 6 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 6 = 18 pencils. - Tickets cost $6 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $6 = $36. - 36 chairs are set out in rows of 6. How many rows are there?
Answer
36 ÷ 6 = 6 rows. - A plant grows 6 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
Answer
12 × 6 = 72 millimetres.
Questions
What is 6 × 12?
72.
What is half of 6 × 8?
6 × 8 = 48, and half of that is 24, which is 6 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 6 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 6 contain nothing.
What is 6 × 7 and 6 × 8?
6 × 7 = 42 and 6 × 8 = 48. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 90 in the 6 times table?
Yes: 90 ÷ 6 = 15 with no remainder. 91 is not, because dividing it by 6 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 6 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
