Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 10 is even.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Each answer is 10 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 10.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 10 times table is double the answer in the 5 times table: 5 × 6 = 30, so 10 × 6 = 60. To multiply 10 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 10 away: 100 − 10 = 90. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 10: 100 + 10 = 110. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 10 → 20 → 40.

There are 9 multiples of 10 below 100, and 99 below 1,000. A number is in the 10 times table exactly when it divides by 10 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 10 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 10 × 10 = 100, and 10 × 100 = 1,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 100 is 50.

Using the 10 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 10 × 7 = 70, you know 70 ÷ 10 = 7 and 70 ÷ 7 = 10. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 10 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 10 = 30 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $10 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $10 = $60.
  3. 60 chairs are set out in rows of 10. How many rows are there?
    Answer60 ÷ 10 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 10 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 10 = 110 millimetres.

About this page

The table, the patterns and the practice questions are all calculated for 10 when the page is opened, so every fact on it is exact. Use the options above the worksheet to change the number of questions or the largest multiplier.

Questions

What is 10 × 12?

120.

What is half of 10 × 8?

10 × 8 = 80, and half of that is 40, which is 10 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 10 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 10 contain nothing.

What is 10 × 7 and 10 × 8?

10 × 7 = 70 and 10 × 8 = 80. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 150 in the 10 times table?

Yes: 150 ÷ 10 = 15 with no remainder. 151 is not, because dividing it by 10 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 10 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
