Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
- Each answer is 3 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 3.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 3 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 3 away: 30 − 3 = 27. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 3: 30 + 3 = 33. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 3 → 6 → 12.
There are 33 multiples of 3 below 100, and 333 below 1,000. A number is in the 3 times table exactly when it divides by 3 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 3 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 3 × 1 = 3 is odd, 3 × 2 = 6 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 3 × 10 = 30, and 3 × 100 = 300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 30 is 15.
Using the 3 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 3 × 7 = 21, you know 21 ÷ 3 = 7 and 21 ÷ 7 = 3. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 3 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 3 = 9 pencils. - Tickets cost $3 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
Answer
5 × $3 = $15. - 18 chairs are set out in rows of 3. How many rows are there?
Answer
18 ÷ 3 = 6 rows. - A plant grows 3 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
Answer
10 × 3 = 30 millimetres.
Questions
What is 3 × 12?
36.
What is half of 3 × 8?
3 × 8 = 24, and half of that is 12, which is 3 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 3 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 3 contain nothing.
What is 3 × 7 and 3 × 8?
3 × 7 = 21 and 3 × 8 = 24. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 45 in the 3 times table?
Yes: 45 ÷ 3 = 15 with no remainder. 46 is not, because dividing it by 3 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 3 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
