Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 8 is even.
- Each answer is 8 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 8.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 8 times table is double the answer in the 4 times table: 4 × 6 = 24, so 8 × 6 = 48. To multiply 8 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 8 away: 80 − 8 = 72. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 8: 80 + 8 = 88. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 8 → 16 → 32.
There are 12 multiples of 8 below 100, and 124 below 1,000. A number is in the 8 times table exactly when it divides by 8 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 8 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 8 × 10 = 80, and 8 × 100 = 800. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 80 is 40.
Using the 8 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 8 × 7 = 56, you know 56 ÷ 8 = 7 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 8 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 8 = 24 pencils. - Tickets cost $8 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $8 = $48. - 24 chairs are set out in rows of 8. How many rows are there?
Answer
24 ÷ 8 = 3 rows. - A plant grows 8 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
Answer
8 × 8 = 64 millimetres.
Questions
What is 8 × 12?
96.
What is half of 8 × 8?
8 × 8 = 64, and half of that is 32, which is 8 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 8 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 8 contain nothing.
What is 8 × 7 and 8 × 8?
8 × 7 = 56 and 8 × 8 = 64. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 120 in the 8 times table?
Yes: 120 ÷ 8 = 15 with no remainder. 121 is not, because dividing it by 8 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 8 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
