Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
- Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
- Each answer is 5 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 5.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 5 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 5 away: 50 − 5 = 45. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 5: 50 + 5 = 55. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 5 → 10 → 20.
There are 19 multiples of 5 below 100, and 199 below 1,000. A number is in the 5 times table exactly when it divides by 5 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 5 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 5 × 1 = 5 is odd, 5 × 2 = 10 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 5 × 10 = 50, and 5 × 100 = 500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 50 is 25.
Using the 5 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 5 × 7 = 35, you know 35 ÷ 5 = 7 and 35 ÷ 7 = 5. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 5 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 5 = 15 pencils. - Tickets cost $5 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
Answer
5 × $5 = $25. - 30 chairs are set out in rows of 5. How many rows are there?
Answer
30 ÷ 5 = 6 rows. - A plant grows 5 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
Answer
10 × 5 = 50 millimetres.
Questions
What is 5 × 12?
60.
What is half of 5 × 8?
5 × 8 = 40, and half of that is 20, which is 5 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 5 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 5 contain nothing.
What is 5 × 7 and 5 × 8?
5 × 7 = 35 and 5 × 8 = 40. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 75 in the 5 times table?
Yes: 75 ÷ 5 = 15 with no remainder. 76 is not, because dividing it by 5 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 5 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
