Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
- Each answer is 7 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 7.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 7 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 7 away: 70 − 7 = 63. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 7: 70 + 7 = 77. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 7 → 14 → 28.
There are 14 multiples of 7 below 100, and 142 below 1,000. A number is in the 7 times table exactly when it divides by 7 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 7 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 7 × 1 = 7 is odd, 7 × 2 = 14 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 7 × 10 = 70, and 7 × 100 = 700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 70 is 35.
Using the 7 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 7 × 7 = 49, you know 49 ÷ 7 = 7 and 49 ÷ 7 = 7. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 7 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 7 = 21 pencils. - Tickets cost $7 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $7 = $42. - 14 chairs are set out in rows of 7. How many rows are there?
Answer
14 ÷ 7 = 2 rows. - A plant grows 7 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
Answer
7 × 7 = 49 millimetres.
Questions
What is 7 × 12?
84.
What is half of 7 × 8?
7 × 8 = 56, and half of that is 28, which is 7 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 7 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 7 contain nothing.
What is 7 × 7 and 7 × 8?
7 × 7 = 49 and 7 × 8 = 56. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 105 in the 7 times table?
Yes: 105 ÷ 7 = 15 with no remainder. 106 is not, because dividing it by 7 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 7 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
