Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
- Each answer is 1 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 1 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1 away: 10 − 1 = 9. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1: 10 + 1 = 11. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1 → 2 → 4.
There are 99 multiples of 1 below 100, and 999 below 1,000. A number is in the 1 times table exactly when it divides by 1 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 1 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1 × 1 = 1 is odd, 1 × 2 = 2 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1 × 10 = 10, and 1 × 100 = 100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10 is 5.
Using the 1 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 1 × 7 = 7, you know 7 ÷ 1 = 7 and 7 ÷ 7 = 1. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 1 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 1 = 3 pencils. - Tickets cost $1 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
Answer
4 × $1 = $4. - 8 chairs are set out in rows of 1. How many rows are there?
Answer
8 ÷ 1 = 8 rows. - A plant grows 1 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
Answer
6 × 1 = 6 millimetres.
Questions
What is 1 × 12?
12.
What is half of 1 × 8?
1 × 8 = 8, and half of that is 4, which is 1 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 1 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1 contain nothing.
What is 1 × 7 and 1 × 8?
1 × 7 = 7 and 1 × 8 = 8. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 15 in the 1 times table?
Yes: every whole number is in the 1 times table.
How do I learn the 1 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
