Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 145 × k = 140 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 145 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 145.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 145 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 145 away: 1,450 − 145 = 1,305. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 145: 1,450 + 145 = 1,595. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 145 → 290 → 580.

Every multiple of 145 is at least 145, so there are none below 100 and 6 below 1,000. A number is in the 145 times table exactly when it divides by 145 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 145 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 145 × 1 = 145 is odd, 145 × 2 = 290 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 145 × 10 = 1,450, and 145 × 100 = 14,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 1,450 is 725.

Using the 145 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 145 × 7 = 1,015, you know 1,015 ÷ 145 = 7 and 1,015 ÷ 7 = 145. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 145 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 145 = 435 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $145 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
    Answer9 × $145 = $1,305.
  3. 1,305 chairs are set out in rows of 145. How many rows are there?
    Answer1,305 ÷ 145 = 9 rows.
  4. A plant grows 145 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
    Answer8 × 145 = 1,160 millimetres.

Questions

What is 145 × 12?

1,740.

What is half of 145 × 8?

145 × 8 = 1,160, and half of that is 580, which is 145 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 145 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 145 contain nothing.

What is 145 × 7 and 145 × 8?

145 × 7 = 1,015 and 145 × 8 = 1,160. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 2,175 in the 145 times table?

Yes: 2,175 ÷ 145 = 15 with no remainder. 2,176 is not, because dividing it by 145 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 145 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
