Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 195 × k = 190 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 195 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 195.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 195 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 195 away: 1,950 − 195 = 1,755. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 195: 1,950 + 195 = 2,145. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 195 → 390 → 780.

Every multiple of 195 is at least 195, so there are none below 100 and 5 below 1,000. A number is in the 195 times table exactly when it divides by 195 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 195 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 195 × 1 = 195 is odd, 195 × 2 = 390 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 195 × 10 = 1,950, and 195 × 100 = 19,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 1,950 is 975.

Using the 195 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 195 × 7 = 1,365, you know 1,365 ÷ 195 = 7 and 1,365 ÷ 7 = 195. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 195 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 195 = 1,170 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $195 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?

Questions

What is 195 × 12?

2,340.

What is half of 195 × 8?

195 × 8 = 1,560, and half of that is 780, which is 195 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 195 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 195 contain nothing.

What is 195 × 7 and 195 × 8?

195 × 7 = 1,365 and 195 × 8 = 1,560. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 2,925 in the 195 times table?

Yes: 2,925 ÷ 195 = 15 with no remainder. 2,926 is not, because dividing it by 195 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 195 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
